Why do we like archives so much? Because they’re full of clues.

For example, in one there’s a mention of ‘Birchington. Zigzag slit trenches visible on aerial photography’ and ‘Trenches on clifftops’.

And then when you’re out walking, and you notice some marks in the grass, and you remember a mention of zigzag trenches…

Appletye artist Dawn Cole spotted these marks today, called Dan Thompson, who mobilised ace Frank leppard photography. And now you can all see what we found – a possible First World War trench system in Birchington, Kent.

Of course – this is now the start of a whole new Appletye project!
